How to Access Data

We understand that many individuals, whether researchers, journalists, advocates, or the general public, may be interested in accessing the Missing/Murdered Database (MMD) and the Serial Homicide Database (SHD). While we recognize the value of open data in advancing crime research and public awareness, access to these databases is currently limited to vetted scholars and professionals who meet specific criteria. At this time, only accredited researchers, law enforcement professionals, and qualified academics with institutional backing are granted access to the databases. These individuals must go through an application process and, in most cases, pay a fee to support the ongoing maintenance, security, and ethical management of sensitive data.

We are actively exploring ways to make certain aspects of the data more publicly available while maintaining privacy protections, data integrity, and ethical considerations. As we continue to refine our policies, we remain committed to balancing transparency with responsible data stewardship. For those interested in database access, we encourage you to reach out with inquiries regarding eligibility, access requirements, and research partnerships.
